Brevard also had a nice gain during the 10-year period from 1960 to 1970, but not as great as the county as a whole. However, it is pointed out that the areas surrounding Bre vard have grown rapidly during the past 10 years. The official figures for Bre vard are: 1970—5,243 1960—4,857 Gain—386 or 7.9 percent agewise. Case Is Named “Man Of The Year” By Jaycees At Annual Meeting The Times Wins Award For News-Features In Contest The Transylvania Times won second place in the News Features category at the an nual North Carolina Press In stitute last weekend at Chapel Hill. The award was presented to John I. Anderson, the editor general manager by Governor Bob Scott. During the past 28 years, The Times has won 40 state and national prizes for out standing journalism. This is more than any other weekly newspaper in North Carolina. The Times was described as an excellent newspaper with Sale Of Tags Reported Slow The sale of license tags for au tomobiles and trucks is slow, ac cording to Mrs. Jeanne Hunter, manager of the tag office on Jor dan street. “Come in soon and purchase your 1971 tag to avoid the rush during the last week of the re newal period,” Mrs. Hunter urges. The green and white plates with the prefix SM on passenger cars must be displayed on ve hicles by midnight on Feb. 15t.h. 1971. This also applies for trucks and trailers. Mrs. Hunter also asks motor ists to have their liability insur ance information on the reverse side of the renewal card all fill ed out before coming to pur chase a tag. The name of the insurance company (not the agent), the policy number and the signa ture of the owner as it appears on the card must be completed before a tag can be purchased. "If this is done before you come into the office, it saves time and will prevent the form ing of long waiting lines," Mrs. Hunter declares, i 1 emphasis on news and features. About the winning of the award, Editor Anderson says: “The first responsibility of a newspaper is to gather, pre pare and disseminate all the news on an unbiased, accurate basis, without fear or favor. “While each member of the staff of The Transylvania Times is naturally quite grati fied that we arc again recog nized by outside judges as producers of a top-flight news, paper, we feel no sense of gloating nor any tendency to complacency. “Rather do we consider the latest award as a challenge to continue to publish the best and most - modern weekly newspaper possible. “The award received by The Times is a compliment to the staff, and more particular ly, it is a result of the fine cooperation and support of our readers, our advertisers, our correspondents and the citizens generally of Brevard and Transylvania county.” L. C. Case, III, was present ed the Distinguished Service Award for 1970 last Friday night at the Brevard Jaycecs' 24th Annual DSA Banquet. Mr. Case, who is from Lake Toxaway, was cited for his role as chairman for the Transyl vania County Council for better schools as planner and director of the school bond campaign. During the campaign, Mr. Case visited all of the P-TA’s and most civic and community or- I gunizations. I The Lake Toxaway Com- ( munity Development Club, of which he was president last year, received three awards— a first in this county. He was also active as a Scoutmaster, director of the Men’s Club and a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. A deacon in the Lake Toxaway Baptist church, he was also a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Case began his career in Transylvania County five years ago as principal at T.C. Hender son school and just last year was named business manager of Transylvania County schools.
